Adidas Nigeria Art Residency Bringing Worlds Together at adidas Nigeria
the new continental africa flagship store
What does community look like when different cultures, histories, and identities come together under one roof?
Created through an artist residency with Adidas in Lagos, Nigeria, my work explores this question through two original paintings: Community: Humans of Adidas and Community: It Takes a Village. Together, the pieces reflect the many cultural identities that make up Nigeria and the connections that emerge when these worlds meet.
Drawing inspiration from the country's rich cultural diversity, the work brings together references to Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and other Nigerian communities, celebrating the distinct identities that coexist within a shared national story. Rather than treating these cultures as separate worlds, the paintings explore community as a space where different histories, experiences, and perspectives can exist alongside one another.
The residency coincided with Adidas's expansion of its presence in Nigeria through its flagship space in Lekki, Lagos. In this context, the work contributes to a broader conversation about what it means for a global brand to engage with local culture—not simply by entering a new market, but by creating space for the people, identities, and creative communities that give it meaning.
Through this project, community becomes both the subject and the foundation: a reflection of Nigeria's cultural richness and a reminder that connection is built by bringing our differences into conversation.
